Our school participates every year in a competition hosted by the
Fraser Valley Library. The goal of the program is to encourage
students who might not read to give books a chance, and for students
who read well to try new material and have a forum in which to display
their expertise. Students in grades 4 and 5 form teams of six
to seven players and read six different novels. They then answer
questions about these books in a competitive format. Winning school
teams advance to the second round, held at Terry Fox Library in Port
Coquitlam. Winners of this round then compete against other winning
teams in the Tri-Cities. The next round is hosted somewhere in the
Lower Mainland, and includes teams via satellite link from Kalamazoo,
Michigan (where the program originated) and Seattle, Washington.
Our school has won the regional competition three times in the last
five years!
Readers Are Leaders
This competition is an extension of the program mentioned above and
is intended for our Grade 6 and 7 students. Teams compete against
other Catholic Schools, and it is very challenging! Nevertheless,
our 3 Teams from OLA have won the local competition, and have gone
on to win both times in the finals. The books are usually Red
Cedar nominees, meaning they are written by Canadian authors. We
are extremely proud that Readers Are Leaders was introduced
and developed by one of our own parents, Karen Romein, who ran our
school library for many years. Currently, approximately 10 schools
from different Catholic schools participate, and more are expressing
interest.
