Our School

A Brief History

Our Lady of the Assumption School was established in 1982. It opened with Kindergarten and grade one children attending classes in the parish portable while the actual school building was being constructed. March 17, 1983 marked the official opening of the school building. An addition was constructed in 1992 creating space for a new kindergarten classroom, a music room and computer lab as well as a Learning Support Area.

The founding pastor was Father Christopher Vermeulen who with the founding parents fulfilled their dream of building a Catholic School for the parish children. In 1993, Father Vermeulen retired and Father Rufin Mika became pastor for the next thirteen years. During this time Archbishop Carney High School was opened on Our Lady of the Assumption Parish property with three portables. The grade eight students from Our Lady of the Assumption and other ‘feeder’ parishes shared facilities with the elementary school children. Mr. Peter Dawe was the founding Principal of Carney High. In 2006, Father Mika was transferred to Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish in Aldergrove. Father Ron Thompson was assigned to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish.

Mrs. Muriel Walters was the head teacher of Assumption School in its first two years of operation. Mrs. Stephanie Reinhart was named Principal in 1984. In 1989 Mr. John van der Pauw became Principal. The school presently has 244 students from grades K to 7.

The school comes under the authority of the Catholic Independent Schools of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Each school has a Parish Education Committee that represents the CISVA at the local level. Mrs. Shirley Armilotta was the first Chairperson of the Parish Education Committee. The current Chairperson is Mr. Steven Vinthers.
